SPIDERMAN ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE
Spiderman Across the Spiderverse was truly a team effort. The final push to complete the art for over 20 Onesheets, Teasers and Billboards for (our vendor BLT Communication’s) marketing campaign was truly intense and could not have been achieved without the hard work, long hours and professional talent of our team. The poster elements all came through me; I was responsible for the initial set up and uprezz of every character in every poster, including the over 50 background characters seen in the two main “group” posters. I did initial paint on many of them, including all the background characters, and final paint on several key elements, including compositing and painting the Portals in the iconic Onesheet (& Billboards, etc), as well as painting the entire “Flying Gwen” Onesheet (& Billboards, etc.) (see above)
I was also responsible for quality control of all the work; and after the team had painted and put the elements together, the posters went through me one more time for qc before being sent out. All in all, it was a tremendous but fulfilling task.
In addition to the major Marketing Campaign, my involvement in SV2 was extensive. I retouched dozens of pub stills and painted many Style Guide characters. Some of the Style Guide characters have been pictured here next to examples of how they were used by our vendors. I painted and composited huge imagery pieces for outdoor and event spaces – the Main Entrance installation on the SPA campus & other SPA campus decor, the Window Display on the SPE campus, an interactive ComiCon booth and giant banners 40 feet long that were used for company events. I also painted and retouched many images for our Vendors, including Hyundai, Jordan Air and Fortnite. I also designed the placement of the imagery for the 5 Spiderverse Building Sets that were offered by Burger King in their Happy Meal.
It was an honor to work on such an amazing, innovative and truly industry-transformative film.
On a personal note, I believe Spiderman actually may have saved my life. I was about to quickly run out to the store when I received an email about an SV project, which delayed me. That delay kept me from being inside the grocery store where the King Soopers March 2021 shooting took place in Boulder, CO, down the street from my house. Ten people tragically lost their lives. So thank you Spiderman, on many, many levels.
MITCHELLS VS THE MACHINES
Mitchells vs the Machines was so much fun to work on. The threat of AI Robots taking over is a subject close to my heart. I found the characters delightful and the story wonderful; it was a first class movie in my book, worthy of the Academy Award it was nominated for.
Below are some of the many Style Guide characters I worked on, which were uprezzed, retouched, painted and utilized for a variety of theatrical and marketing applications. In the end I think I retouched/painted approx 25 characters and over 400 publicity stills!
(not all shown here, of course) Mitchells vs The Machines was originally called Connected, and then changed to MvM. Below are some of the pub stills and Style Guide characters I worked on, shown next to various Marketing applications.
VIVO
I am a huge fan of Lin Manuel Miranda. It was an honor to work on this movie, his debut animated Musical. Vivo! Below are some of the many characters that I worked on, which were uprezzed, retouched and painted, and then utilized for a variety of theatrical and marketing applications.
Hotel Transylvania TRANSFORMANIA
& MONSTER PETS: A Hotel Transylvania Short
Work done: uprezzing, retouching and painting of characters & elements used for various posters and as style-guide content.
* The Split-character design onesheet and teaser campaign was a joint effort by several of SPA’s other wonderful artists and myself. As the senior artist on the project, the final characters painted by the other artists were run-by and finalized by me before being sent out to BLT for final poster layout and production. This was completed on a tight schedule and was a blast!
WISH DRAGON
Wish Dragon was released in China as well as in the US. Below are some of the many characters that I worked on, which were uprezzed, retouched, painted and utilized for a variety of theatrical and product applications.
SPIDERMAN: Into The SpiderVerse
SpiderVerse was a team effort that involved many artists. The below represents a few of the style guide poses I uprezzed, retouched and painted, starting with CGI generated originals. These poses (along with others not shown here) have been used in marketing applications such as posters, quads. standees and billboards, some of which are shown next to the characters. I also did retouching and paint work on publicity stills, backgrounds and for other various domestic and international projects. It was an honor to be involved with and contribute to this film.
SONY PICTURES ANIMATION – Other Films
All films are team efforts and involve many artists. I am involved mostly in the uprezzing, retouching, compositing and painting of Style Guide characters, which are then used in posters, quads, billboards, standees and other marketing applications (like depicted above.) I do however often paint and complete entire images, like many (but not all) of the below.
